March 31 – April 1

Dan woke up and headed to the train station for breakfast and Starbucks coffee for Tammy, and after we got ready we checked out, dropped our backpacks, and went to Milan a final time. Dan and Noah visited the Lego Store which had an incredible model of the Duomo. We then retrieved our bags and took the first of two trains to Verona.

We loved Verona! We walked a few miles around the city, toured its Colosseum, saw Juliet’s balcony, had a messy Nutella crepe, and sat at an outdoor table for drinks and a shared pizza. The city was beautiful and we planned to recommend it to anyone who travels to Italy.

Our second train of the day was delayed due to the Orient Express occupying our track, but we eventually arrived in Venice after dusk, where we figured out the water transit, took a boat to the Rialto, and walked with our hiking packs down narrow streets to our hotel. We then headed to St. Mark’s Square for our first view at night, found a pasta & pizza restaurant for dinner, and headed back to our hotel for much-deserved sleep!

Saturday was our first chance to leave our packs in the room and explore without them – two nights in Venice! Dan woke up early and took our dirty clothes to a Venice laundromat, walking thru empty St. Mark’s Square at dawn on the way. Laundry was easy, and after that, we began our day in Venice with a tour of the cathedral in St. Mark’s Square under perfectly blue skies.

From there, we took a public transit boat back to the train station, where we began a 3+ mile hike thru Venice’s main shopping street. With the perfect weekend weather, it seemed that thousands of Italians had made day trips there, and there was an energetic, busy vibe all day.

We explored for hours, had a drink near the Rialto Bridge, and had dinner at an Italian restaurant very close to our hotel that we found by chance. After dinner we took a long, late-night boat bus around the island for 45 minutes, then walked back to our hotel from St. Mark’s for our final night in Venice.
