Sunday, May 1

Our clocks were set for 5:30am, but I woke up early and luckily learned that our flight would be delayed for a couple hours. So we stayed an extra hour, packed our stuff into our bike panniers, I retrieved the bikes from the hotel garage, and we embarked for Brussels-Noord station at 7:30 for the train to the airport. Biking thru Brussels center on an early Sunday was the perfect way to say goodbye to the city!

At the airport, we grabbed a working spot for dismantling and packing our bikes, and Noah and I were able to get 3 bike boxes from United Airlines – larger than the ones we brought, requiring less disassembly. It was hectic to get the bikes in the boxes, but all in all it went smoothly, and the airline brought us to the front of the line to get everything needed for the bikes. We dropped them off at an oversize baggage counter, and after that we were free to hang out at the airport for a couple hours before our flight. We found a piano that Noah and I both played.

Our flight was pretty issue-free, and we were soon in O’Hare to find our bike boxes, get an Uber, and head home. We ended up taking the bikes out of the boxes to fit in the Uber home, and everything worked out perfectly!
